PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Legislation aimed at enabling Rhode Island to adopt fifth-generation wireless technology, known as 5G, is heading to Gov. Gina Raimondo for approval.

The General Assembly last week passed the legislation that sponsors say will facilitate the installation of technology for the network in the state.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — AARP Illinois and consumer-rights groups in the state say they oppose legislation that would allow AT&T to divert its resources away from landlines.

The legislation would permit the utility giant to free itself from a legal obligation to provide landline service in areas with old technology. AT&T officials said almost 90 percent of customers have gotten rid of landlines in favor of wireless technology or internet-based communication.

ATLANTA (AP) — A company that handles parking enforcement for the city of Atlanta knowingly and illegally cited drivers for non-existent violations, a lawsuit filed Wednesday alleges.

The suit alleges that PARKatlanta and its parent company have known for years that the wireless technology it uses "causes a lack of synchronized and accurate data" that can result in the mobile devices used by the company's employees showing that someone hasn't paid for parking when, in fact, they have.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo says she's positioning her state to be the first to deploy fifth-generation wireless technology, known as 5G.

The Democratic governor said Wednesday that the state has issued a request inviting recommendations from national telecommunications firms for making the state a hub for 5G networks. Responses are due by Jan. 13.
